Whether or not I actually get the second one done is kind of up in the air. (See Exhibit A:)

Exhibit A. But somehow the second one never wants to get done. It's totally a psychological thing because I feel like I got through an entire project, but then comes the realization that I'm only halfway through. Bah. Right now I'm wearing the one mitt in an attempt to give myself incentive to complete its mate. I was able to convince myself to get started on it this morning, but we'll see how it goes... ha.

Operation Button

I've moved onto a new project. A fingerless mitt camo-along got started on Ravelry so I went out and bought some Red Heart camo yarn. I'm generally not a fan of their stuff, but it was either that or Bernat (which I would have preferred), and the Bernat camo looked more stripey than camo-y. So in the end I had to go with the Red Heart. I read somewhere that the yarn softens up if you wash it, so maybe it won't be so bad.

Anyway, here's what I have at the moment. I got sick of DPNs from the last fingerless mitts that I did (which I actually haven't finished yet... nor have I completed any of the projects from my last post... -_- ), so I thought it would be a cute idea to have it button up. I actually had this one completed and bound off everything, but I realized that I did the button-holes wrong!! So I unraveled about half of it and started again. Isn't it cute though? I'm glad that I decided to knit flat, because the edges have more of a camo look, versus the middle which just comes out stripey. This is actually my first time working with a striped yarn, so it's an interesting experience.

So yesterday I went button-hunting. Had to find the perfect buttons for my wristwarmers. I didn't know exactly what I was looking for, but I knew I would know immediately once I found them. Made a trip to Daytona for size 8 DPNs and figured I might as well take a quick look around the store before heading over to M & J for their huge button selection. But just as I was about to leave, something caught my eye, and there you go, I found my buttons. Mission accomplished!

So Many Projects, So Little Time

1. The reversible Rangers scarf is finally coming along slowly but surely now. But remind me never to do reversible anything bigger than a potholder. This is taking forever!!

2. I decided that one can never have too many fingerless mitts, so I did a search on Ravelry and thought the Axel mitts were really cool. The cuff idea is awesome! It's like the layman's convertible mittens, ha! But I wanted to knit from my stash, so I'm doing my own variation of it with good 'ol worsted weight yarn.

3. Also started Argosy a couple of months ago, but kinda forgot about it for a while... I also forgot to take pictures of it.

4. Short version of my lace-up armwarmers to match this scarf. I finished this a few months ago--though as you can see they're not really finished because I was to lazy to weave in the leftover yarn... -_-

Twinkle, Twinkle...

This post is about 3 months obsolete, but oh well. I'm feeling lazy, so this will be a picture-driven post about the Anthropologie knitting workshop on 10/9/07 and the scarf that followed...

First off, free stuff! Woo hoo!
bag

yarn

needles

Then came the demonstration.

Notice the ginormous ball of yarn.

My not not-quite-as-giant ball of yarn.

After the demonstration there was free food and discounted shopping, but I don't have any pictures of that. On to the knitting!

This is the pattern for the Diamond Scarf, which is what we were supposed to make. Compare the 15 mm "Buffy" needles to the regular size 6...? 8... (eh, doesn't matter) circulars. That's right vampires, be very afraid.

Then I figured that since I didn't buy any extra yarn to complete this scarf, I would throw caution to the wind and make my own little one-skein scarf. I always wanted to try knitting lengthwise, and since it would really show up on the chunky yarn and I wouldn't have to deal with knitting 500 stitches on one row, that's what I did. But I still had to squeeze about 100 sts on that needle. That was a pain in the--

See what I mean??

But somehow I managed without stabbing myself in the process.

Ta da! These were done quick and dirty because it suddenly got cold a couple of weekends ago. Tried to recreate the XO pattern on the first attempt, but it looked too sloppy, so I stuck with a simple stockinette for the most part. Had just enough leftover yarn to make the mittens. They're a little worse for the wear now, but soooo warm. Plus, I can still knit while wearing them!

"action" shot :P

Catching up with...

Whoops, way behind on this blog. And I still only managed to fill in my stash (sans pictures) and needles. I haven't even touched the projects section yet. Did join some groups, wheeee! I'm so happy that there are hockey and Yankees fans that knit! Unfortunately, I have work to do and an exam to study for, so I probably won't be able to play with it much any time soon. But this is like OCD knitter's heaven!

In the meantime, here is my completed X's and O's scarf! Though it's more about random striping than XO's anymore. You can sorta tell that there are X's and O's in there... sorta... Nevertheless, here it is:

Next will be the new scarf I made this weekend! I wanted something more interesting than the same-old stockinette for my uber-soft Lion Brand cotton, but wasn't happy with the result. Maybe I've just been too fastidious for my own good lately, but even after spending days knitting and un-knitting and re-knitting and un-knitting again, I completely scrapped this design

in favor of a more streamlined version.

While I do like the random x's and o's that would be interspersed throughout the scarf, as well as the xo border, it all looked too sloppy. (Apparently, cabling has that effect on gauge.) So just when I decided I was on course with my scarf design, I ripped it all apart anyway. I do like the effect, but not for this scatf. The new design still has the cabled x's and o's border at the edge, but instead of purling in the primary brown color, I started my striping early.

I'm still not sure which border I like more, but this one works better with the rest of the pattern. However, the original one looks more distinctive... oh well. I also decided to go with random stripe widths this time--because it's just more fun to knit that way--and came up with a method of carrying the dormant (for lack of a better word) yarn strand up while knitting the other color. Unfortunately, as you can see in the 2nd picture above, the background color shows through on the side where the yarn is being carried, despite my efforts to hide it. Here's an image of the back view, since that probably shows what I'm doing better.

Call me crazy, but I'm still not feeling 100% on this scarf. Hoping that when I block it, everything will magically work out. I just have to make sure I don't go on another ripping frenzy. I refuse to do so! This yarn probably can't take much more abuse anyway. (Did I mention this organic cotton stuff has a tendency to shed/fall apart?) With luck, my next update will be about a nearly completed scarf.

Hello Goodbye

So this pattern isn't going to work out with my baby cashmerino yarn either. But I haven't been neglecting my knitting, just the blogging part. These babies took me about 3 weeks worth of commutes to finish. Had to tweak the original pattern to get the perfect fit, but that's what the test armwarmer was for. Next will be the mini navy blue wristwarmers version to match my navy blue scarf, once the yarn comes in. I'll have to make sure I have enough ribbon for that. Finding the perfect ribbon to go with these armwarmers was a real pain. There's a whole long story about having the perfect shade of burgundy, but being 1 or 2 feet short, and then discovering that the last of that ribbon was gone, and that the new spool at the store was a different dye lot and all wrong--but I won't get into that now.

(As an aside, bamboo needles are so much better to work with than aluminum. Made the first glove using a pair of aluminum DPNs and got fed up and bought Clover Takumi needles. I was holding out for a nice pair of circular needles, but apparently they don't make size 2 circulars, oh well.)

Nothing like a ball game...

...for getting 3 solid hours of knitting done. Hockey would be best, but since it's June, I must watch baseball instead. In any event, my second attempt at my Harry Potter hat was much better than the first. Restarted shortly after my last post and then finished it off over the weekend. This was my progress somewhere toward the beginning of the Yankees game:

And then around the 7th or 8th inning:

Haven't gotten around to taking pictures of the finished product yet (which is very cute, I should note), but since that was such a quick knit, I decided to get started on a second one this morning. My Harry Potter hat is off to a bad start. I forgot that dpn's can be tricky in the beginning. Stopped partway through a row and when I picked it up I somehow got the rows inverted. So I ended up going back and re-knitting the part I had just done and not finishing the remainder of the row. Gold is close enough to orange, right?

Test #1: Complete!

Armwarmers test #1 is finished! I was so excited I didn't even bother blocking it or finding a ribbon. Leftover yarn works just fine. This is such a cute pattern; I can't get over it. Though I think I will have to tweak it a bit first before I move on to phase 2. I was a bit nervous while I was knitting, because although the pattern said that it would stretch, it just looked way to small to go around my arm. But it seems to be a good fit and I haven't even blocked yet. Though I do kind of feel like I'm losing circulation now... Of course I am, in effect, wearing a corset around my hand. Not sure how far I'll get in these warm months, but I like the way it's coming along so far. It's basically a seed stitch border with stockinette for the main part, and a row of purl to separate them. I'm going with the cream color for my trial run because, well, it's thin and I had extra lying around. One of the Lion Brand baby yarns, nice and soft. I've been a bit distracted lately, so I haven't devoted much time to knitting or blogging. I guess I'm just a seasonal knitter after all. I did find a blueprint for my next project in a very risque knitting book. A bit too much for me, so I'm just going to wait to borrow a copy from the library, but they have a lovely armwarmers/opera gloves pattern.

Actually, I wanted wristwarmers, but this makes for a good starting point. I'm gonna use navy blue to match my scarf--though technically I made the scarf to match the really cool imaginary wristwarmer pattern in my head. It was originally inspired by the lace-up fingerless gloves pattern in Leigh Radford's "AlterKNITS" but that particular pattern seemed ...sloppier than what I really wanted. I just love the lace-up part.

Tying up Loose Ends

Another teaser pic. Pink was just one of the many colors I wanted to play with. I love Bernat Cottontots--mostly for the vivid, fun colors, and also for the fact that it is cotton. Cotton is great for random little projects and crocheting. My only complaint is that it's a little hard to work with since it's not as smooth as wool, and this yarn has an extra string twining around it (there's probably an obvious term for this that I'm forgetting now), which is rough on the hands after a while. Gives a little bit of that rope burn feel if you go too fast. But did I mention I love the colors?

And here's a teaser pic of what came out of all this yarn. Hastily painted, I should say, because we didn't get to the store until an hour before they were closing. I was a bit nervous about how the globbed on paint job would come out, but happily it turned out okay. And now my new mug will model for you.

"Panoramic" view:

An aerial shot:

And last but not least...

You may or may not have noticed the little splotch by the bottom of the handle. Or is it earrings and hoods? Either way, on the way home last night I discovered that one of my earrings was gone. I was upset because this was the pair I made myself!! Not to mention this was the second earring I had lost in a span of maybe a week or a week and a half. My big comfy scarf pushes the hooks/posts out of my ears, sigh. So here's what I was left with.

Here was the one I lost last week. Luckily it was easily replaced after a trip to Express.

And there was a happy ending to this story as well. Unfortunately, I missed the first 1/3 of the event, so as you can see, I didn't exactly have a good vantage point. I caught the tail end of the first panelist's presentation and that was probably the most interesting one. I did manage to look at some samples of David Cole's knitting with lead, kevlar, and other such fun stuff. I wish I had seen the lead knitting process...

The second person to speak was Takako Ueki of Habu Textiles--which I have been dying to go to--and she discussed knitting with stainless steel yarn (generally wrapped in silk) as well as paper and bamboo yarn. A lot more delicate than lead, but definitely much more feasible for someone like me. The interesting thing about the stainless steel yarn is that it retains shapes and--I may have gotten the details wrong for this--if you try felting it, the steel will start to show through the silk. The paper yarn sounds like it would turn out interestingly but I would be too afraid of it falling apart on me because I'm paranoid like that. Though supposedly they treat it or blend it with something else so that won't happen.

Lastly was the qiviuk person. We got to hear all about the plight of the arctic muskox. To be honest, this was around the time I started wandering around the exhibits (good thing too, because they closed everything up not even 5 minutes after the panel ended). I feel bad for saying that now because I did win the baby skein of yarn and all. So the last panelist was Linda Cortright, who is the editor of Wild Fibers Magazine. The muskox were a diminishing prehistoric species, but from what I gather (no pun intended... really) it seems that they're making a comeback now.

But, as I said, I missed a chunk of that discussion because I was busy taking these pictures. I apologize in advance for the poorly focused pictures. Apparently photography is prohibited in the museum, so I had to sneak these. Let's hope no one finds these pictures and tries to take them down...

No, that's not a stitch counter

Yeah, so apparently earrings and scarves don't mix well. It's a baby skein of qiviuk yarn. What, you ask, is qiviuk? Well, according to the official qiviuk site:
Qiviuk is the inner down of the Canadian Arctic Muskox. It is a fiber of exceptional quality. Noticeably softer and lighter than cashmere, and 8 times warmer than wool. The Muskox is one of the Arctic most valuable resources.
At the end of the panel (which I will write more about later, or at least about the exhibit) they raffled off about 20 to 30 of these little guys, plus 2 grand prizes of scarves made from this yarn, all donated by Jacques Cartier Clothier. Here are a couple of pictures to demonstrate the scale of the yarn ball. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of the scarves, but they were beautiful. From my vantage point in the back of the room, they looked big and shawl-like. The yarn seems to knit up very finely and delicately. Speaking of knitting up, I have no idea what I'm going to make with my new yarn. I'm not sure that I'd even be able to get a complete wrist-warmer out of it. Oh well, we shall see...

Here it is sitting next to my PDA.

The specs.

And one last picture of it all snuggled up next to a big ball of yarn. It took me a while to hunt down the mini terra cotta pot though (to give it some authenticity, you know). If I get bored enough, I might make the other variety they have in the book. It's like magic. Basically, I finished the scarf last month and blocked it and everything. When I was working on the tassels, I realized that the stripes at one end of the scarf were noticeably wider than the other end. Apparently I'm a tighter knitter now than I was four years ago. It annoyed me very much, but my efforts to get the smaller side to stretch didn't do much good, and I decided there was nothing left to do but accept the imperfection and pretend it gave the scarf character.

So I grabbed the scarf today to take a picture of it in all its tassel-y glory. The tempurature suddenly dropped by 50 degerees so I've been wearing it the past couple of days. Of course I found myself critically eying the blocks of color, except now the two ends lined up perfectly! I guess I don't have enough knitting experience to be able to explain this phenomenon, but I can't complain. On to the pictures...

Rosy Striped Scarf
2002?/2003? - December 2006

Type: circular knitting

Stitch/Pattern: stockinette

Needle: size 6

Yarn: Lion Brand "Wool-Ease" (Blush Heather and Rose Heather)

As I mentioned, I did circular knitting to make this scarf, so in essence it's a big tube that's been flattened out. 420 rows of 64 knit sts. (it's much easier to count rows when you have blocks of color). One good thing about the double-layer is that I was able to hide the trail of yarn that formed from switching colors on the inside. And I added the tassels--using a crochet hook to pull the yarn through--to keep the two layers together. Aren't they cute?

The Unveiling

So it would appear that I'm about a month late with this post. I'm a bit embarrassed since I don't even have 5 posts here yet. But what can I say, I'm a sporadic blogger and a sporadic knitter. That doesn't bode well for future knitting epiphanies, does it... In any event, I now present to you my finished scarf.

Navy Blue Knit Scarf
December 2006

Type: knit

Stitch/Pattern: stockinette stitch w/eyelet rows for ribbon (garter stitch border)

Needle: size 8

Yarn: Lion Brand "Wool-Ease" (Navy)

This is a good cold-but-not-bitterly-cold winter scarf. It's keeps me quite warm, but it's surprisingly thin and light, thanks to some help from an iron. (Which reminds me, I will need to write about my first forays in blocking at some point.) The best part--NO MORE CURLING!! I'm also happy with my color choice. Navy blue is a little bit of a departure for me. I usually go for lighter colors when knitting, but I've had an idea in my head for lace-up navy blue arm/wristwarmers for a while, and this was the companion scarf to go with it. I haven't even figured out how I'm going to make the wrist-warmers or exactly what I want them to look like, so the companion item ended up coming first. Funny how things turn out. (Not really.)

Stripes!

Rosy Striped Scarf
2002?/2003? - unfinished

Type: circular knitting

Stitch/Pattern: stockinette

Needle: size 6

Yarn: Lion Brand "Wool-Ease" (Blush Heather and Rose Heather)

This is a project I've been working on for quite a few years now. The good news is I think that I'm almost done. I wanted something really warm and cozy and I still hadn't figured out a way around the dreaded curling problem, so circular knitting seemed the best way to go. Automatic double layer and no misbehaving edges to worry about! My circular knitting looks more like box knitting since I had to use double-pointed needles (they just don't make circular needles short enough!), but I think it's more fun this way. Plus it's much easier to keep track of where the rows start and end, not to mention the fact that it confuses the heck out of people on the train, ha.

P.S. I finished my other scarf on Monday! Pictures to come soon...

Just in time for the holidays...

Navy Blue Knit Scarf
December 2006 - unfinished

Type: knit

Stitch/Pattern: stockinette stitch w/eyelet rows for ribbon (garter stitch border)

Needle: size 8

Yarn: Lion Brand "Wool-Ease" (Navy)

Started this about a week ago after a lot of tinkering with selvedges and borders and all that fun stuff. Finally decided to go with a plain-old stockinette stitch with a 4-st garter stitch border to prevent curling. I'm still having issues with the edges curling, so I'll have to look into blocking, and hopefully that will fix things. If you notice the eyelet holes in the second picture, that will be for the ribbon to go through. I'm aiming to finish this by next Tuesday; we'll see how that goes.

Crochet Baby Blanket

This is something that I started back in August.
